Young Women’s Health Study

Phase: Recruiting

Condition(s): von Willebrand Disease

Other Study ID Number(s): R105306

What Is the Purpose of This Study?

Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) is common in adolescents, and an underlying bleeding disorder is a common cause of HMB. Von Willebrand Disease is the most common bleeding disorder (1% of general population). However, bleeding disorders remain under-diagnosed. We are testing the ability of quick tools (bleeding symptom survey and/or ferritin levels) to predict an underlying diagnosis of von Willebrand Disease in teens with HMB.

Who Can Take Part in This Study?

You can participate if you:

  • Are 9 to 21 years old.
  • Have had your first period.

What Will Happen During This Study?

Participants will have one visit to an outpatient clinic, where they will:

  • Answer a few short surveys.
  • If your survey answers suggest you have heavy menses or abnormal bleeding, you will also be asked to have a blood draw the same day.
