Nationwide Children’s Hospital Redesignated with American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition®

Fifth consecutive recognition reinforces a commitment to nursing excellence.

January 9, 2024

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program® has awarded Nationwide Children’s Hospital its fifth consecutive Magnet Designation. The ANCC Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes health care organizations worldwide for their commitment to nursing excellence and innovation. There are just over 600 Magnet designated hospitals in the world, with less than 1% having achieved this honor five or more times.

Nationwide Children’s was the first freestanding pediatric hospital in Ohio to earn Magnet status by the Magnet Recognition Program in April 2005. Since then, Nationwide Children’s has continuously maintained Magnet status with redesignations in 2009, 2014 and 2019, and now 2023 reflecting the hospital’s commitment to providing the highest quality patient care and supporting and developing nurses.

“Our nursing staff is second to none, and this recognition shows that once again,” said Tim Robinson, CEO, Nationwide Children’s Hospital. “Their commitment to Nationwide Children’s mission, to each other, and to our patients has made countless lives better.”

ANCC’s Magnet Recognition is widely accepted as the gold standard of excellence in nursing. The Magnet Model provides a framework for nursing professional practice, research and evidenced-based practice, and measurement of outcomes. Through this framework, ANCC evaluates applicants on rigorous criteria that reflect the evidence of excellence in patient care and outcomes, and the direct impact of the care of frontline nurses.

“Magnet Designation is the highest honor an organization can receive for professional nursing practice, and this validation from outside our walls is a testament to what we strive toward every day,” said Lee Ann Wallace, MBA, BSN, RN, NEA-BC, chief nursing officer at Nationwide Children’s. “I am so proud to work alongside this incredible team of over 4,000 nurses. Our culture of excellence continues to be evident and recognized every day, and our nurses exemplify that value.”

To achieve Magnet status, the Magnet Steering Committee and Magnet Champions at Nationwide Children’s worked diligently to submit the redesignation application with over 3,000 pages of documentation and supporting evidence of how Nationwide Children’s meets or exceeds Magnet standards and national benchmarks of quality nursing care and outcomes. Submitted in June 2023, the application received a score of Exemplary, moving the organization straight to a four-day site visit with Magnet appraisers in October 2023.
