Preparing for a new baby comes with many important decisions, one of which is choosing their pediatrician. A pediatrician plays a central role in a child’s medical care, growth and development, while also serving as a trusted source of guidance for parents and caregivers. Taking the time to evaluate pediatric practices before a baby arrives can help ensure a strong, long-tern partnership.

How close is the office to home?

Location is a practical but important consideration. Infants require frequent well-visits during their first year, along with occasional sick visits. Choosing a pediatrician close to home can make appointments easier to manage and can also reduce stress during urgent situations.

Is the practice solo or a group practice?

Many pediatricians work within group practices. In these settings, families may not always see the same physician, particularly during sick visits or after-hour care. It is important to feel comfortable with all providers in the practices and confident in their clinical judgment. Asking about the size of the group and how care is coordinated can provide helpful insight.

How are after-hours care managed?

Children do not always get sick during regular business hours. Understanding how a practice handles their after-hours calls is essential.

  • Is there a nurse, nurse practitioner or physician available to answer calls?
  • How are urgent concerns escalated?
  • Is advice provided by phone, or are after-hours visits available?

What are the office hours and appointment availability?

Timely access is care is important when a child is sick. Practices that offer same-day sick visits, evening hours or weekend appointments may reduce the need for urgent care or emergency department visits.

Does the pediatrician’s communication style align with family preferences?

Choosing a pediatrician is not only about their credentials but also their communication and approach. Some families prefer detailed explanations and reassurance, while others value a more straightforward, concise style. Meeting potential pediatricians, when possible, can help determine whether their approach aligns with family expectations. Recommendations from friends, family members or other parents can also be helpful.

What is the practice’s approach to topics that matter most to your family?

Families have strong feelings about certain aspects of childcare. Asking about a pediatrician’s recommendations and office policies can help avoid misunderstandings later. Topic to discuss may include:

  • Vaccination policies and schedules
  • Sleep routines and sleep training philosophies
  • Feeding guidance and developmental milestones

Most pediatricians follow evidence-based guidelines, but office policies may vary.

This list is not exhaustive but highlights key areas to explore when selecting a pediatrician. Ultimately, the decision comes down to trust, accessibility and confidence in both the pediatrician and their office staff.
