Quality Tool School (QTS)

  • Quality Tool School (QTS) is a series of introductory classes centered on quality improvement methodology. 
  • The series comprises 4 classes over 1 month. Classes will be held live, virtually. Video assisted excel training will be required prior to taking the classes. 
  • You can register to take the entire series, or individual classes. It is recommended to take all 4 in sequence.
  • QTS is appropriate for any healthcare employee (clinical or non-clinical) who wants an introduction to the tools needed to develop and carry-out successful QI projects.

Class Descriptions

Class 1 - QI Project Tools 1

Tuesday, May 5 (1 -2 PM) or Wednesday, August 5 (11 AM-12 PM)

  • Explore the Model for Improvement framework
  • Identify key QI principles and project planning strategies
  • Learn how to structure and launch an effective improvement project
  • Recognize the roles of teams, data, and testing in QI work

Class 2 - QI Project Tools 2

Tuesday, May 12 (1 -2 PM) or Wed, August 12 (11 AM-12 PM)  

  • Practice applying the steps of a QI project
  • Understand and implement the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle
  • Develop skills to interpret results and plan next steps
  • Gain confidence in leading iterative improvement efforts

Class 3 - QI Data - How to “Get” It

Tues, May 19 (1 -2 PM) or Wed, Aug. 19 (11 AM-12 PM)

  • Identify and define different types of data and measurement strategies  
  • Understand process, outcome, and balancing measures
  • Explore how data is collected and used
  • Learn how to build and interpret a Pareto chart

Class 4 - Charts - You're in Control

Tues, May 26 (1 -2 PM) or Wed, Aug. 26 (11 AM-12 PM)

  • Understand the components of a control chart
  • Learn the difference between common cause and special cause variation
  • Identify which charts to use for different types of data
  • Practice interpreting charts to guide improvement decisions
