Hemostasis-Thrombosis Fellowship

The Joan Fellowship in Pediatric Hemostasis-Thrombosis

Named for Ms. Joan (pronounced jo-ann) Wallick, The Joan Fellowship in Pediatric Hemostasis-Thrombosis provides advanced training to physicians desiring a career dedicated to bleeding and clotting disorders.

Ms. Wallick is a native of Ohio and Columbus has been her home, raising her five children in the Bexley area. She has always believed in giving a person the tools to forge a future and in turn they can give and invest in others. From the very beginning Joan invested in her family in many ways.  She always had a clear vision of how each one of her children would use their individual talents and the opportunities she helped to provide. Joan also gave to her extended family by investing in them and pushing them to achieve to their best of abilities. Philanthropically Joan has given of her time, talents, and money to various charities in our community, always wanting to provide a good Jewish way of life to as many people as possible. Joan believes that a strong community will result in a better way of life for those that are not as fortunate as she was.

Looking to the future her focus turned to an opportunity to invest in providing “best of the best” medical care in our community. The Joan Fellow in Pediatric Hemostasis-Thrombosis at Nationwide Children’s Hospital was the culmination of this endeavor. As Joan said when endowing the fellowship, “We need the best talent trained right here in Columbus and then let it spread”. Joan has always recognized that education and knowledge have always been the true building blocks for the future.  Joan has demonstrated this time and again with all manner of her philanthropic accomplishments.  The idea of helping so many young children live full and healthy lives that in turn can go on and provide for others is the ultimate gift.

What You Need to Know

Why Consider Additional Training in Hemostasis-Thrombosis?

The need for physicians trained in hemostasis-thrombosis is high:  Studies conducted by the American Society of Hematology, the National Hemophilia Foundation, and the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology have all identified a growing workforce shortage of adequately trained physicians in the hemostasis-thrombosis discipline.

The research funding environment grows ever more competitive: Physician-scientists with advanced training will be more attractive applicants.

Why Choose Nationwide Children's Hospital?

Nationwide Children's has internationally recognized faculty with over 30 years combined experience in clinical program development who are Board Certified in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT. Our team has faculty appointments at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. We are physician-scientists with funded basic-, translational- and clinical-research programs and active collaborations with the Internal Medicine Hemostasis/ Thrombosis clinical and research programs at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, with faculty of The Ohio State University College of Medicine Division of Hematology.

We are a part of the federally and regionally funded HTC (Hemostasis & Thrombosis Center) clinical programs:

At Nationwide Children's, we treat hundreds of patients served each year with diagnoses ranging from common to the rarest hemostasis-thrombosis problems, covering the entire spectrum of the discipline.

Our hospital has vibrant sub-specialty programs in related disciplines:

Curriculum

The Hemostasis-Thrombosis Fellowship curriculum is somewhat flexible in order to accommodate the unique learning needs of the matriculated fellowship applicant, which may be dependent on their ultimate career goals and/or designed to build upon their past experiences.
