Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD) Advanced Fellowship

Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD) Advanced Fellowship

The Nationwide Children’s Hospital Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD) Fellowship is a unique, one-year advanced training program with a mission to create the next generation of leaders in the care of infants with the most severe forms of BPD.

Our comprehensive program, decades of experience, and national and international leadership in this field make us uniquely suited to create the first sustainable, cutting-edge advanced fellowship in BPD Medicine.

This novel fellowship program is housed in the Comprehensive Center for BPD (CCBPD) at Nationwide Children's. The CCBPD was founded in 2004 and provides state-of-the-art care utilizing a multidisciplinary team focused on improving survival and long-term outcomes including cardiopulmonary and neurodevelopmental outcomes. Care within the CCBPD is provided in a first-of-its-kind 24-bed dedicated BPDICU (the only stand-alone BPD unit in the world) and after discharge, in one of the largest BPD outpatients clinics in the country.

Our team consists of physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, nutritionists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, music therapists, social workers, care coordinators and psychologists all of whom are experienced and dedicated to caring for patients with moderate and severe BPD.

What You Need to Know

Curriculum

During the fellowship, trainees will be directly involved in both the inpatient and outpatient care of patients with moderate to severe BPD. The fellowship starts with an intensive introduction to the CCBPD program, with on-going didactic learning throughout the fellowship. Fellows will be actively involved in consults, both in-house at Nationwide Children’s Hospital as well as consultations from outside institutions.

A typical rotation schedule would include:

  • 4 rotations in the inpatient unit
  • 4 rotations in the BPD Clinic
  • 2 consult rotations
  • 2 research rotations

This schedule can be tailored to fit the individual needs of each fellow. Call for the CCBPD is at-home call, and fellows will take first call with BPD attending back-up up to 7 days a month depending on scheduling and duty hours. Fellows will also be expected to actively participate in the BPD Collaborative, and attendance at the annual 3-day BPD Collaborative meeting is strongly encouraged and funded by the CCBPD.
