Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Professional Psychology

Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Professional Psychology

Nationwide Children’s Hospital is committed to providing the highest quality in the professional education and training of child health care providers. We offer six different post-doctoral psychology fellowships at Nationwide Children's.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Department of Pediatrics of The Ohio State University have jointly supported postdoctoral psychology fellows annually providing financial, administrative, and logistical support. The Psychology fellowship programs are administratively housed in Nationwide Children’s Hospital Big Lots Behavioral Health Services.

The psychology fellowship program offers opportunity for advanced training across six specialty tracks, each designed to provide unique and comprehensive experiences. These specialty tracks are operated by training faculty who are all psychologists employed by Nationwide Children's. Fellows receive approximately 2,000 hours of training per year. The state of Ohio does not have a specific requirement for postdoctoral hours needed towards licensure.

The structure of the fellowship is designed to enable trainees to gain specialized experience in professional psychology, as well as develop specific areas of expertise. Within a general set of training expectations, the fellows have some flexibility to personalize the experience. In doing so, the fellows fill gaps in previous training, expand areas of competence, and develop a specialty area in preparation for independent practice. Although each specialty track has its own specific training requirements and expectations, clinical fellows will spend at least 20 hours per week in clinical activities. In addition, fellows participate in additional activities, including didactic training, teaching (optional), research/scholarly activities, and supervision.

Tracks

The Nationwide Children's Hospital fellowship in professional psychology provides six tracks of emphasis. Below are links to learn more about each track:

Education and Training

Nationwide Children’s Hospital offers a dynamic learning environment in which nearly 2,500 students from multiple disciplines participate in clinical experiences annually. Nationwide Children’s Hospital is fortunate to be the only pediatric tertiary health care provider and the largest provider of behavioral health services to children and adolescents in central Ohio.

The fellowship program has identified five domains of competency that are the targets of our training (each track has varying levels of emphasis in each of these domains). Those domains are:

  1. Assessment
  2. Intervention
  3. Consultation and Interdisciplinary Relationships
  4. Scientific Foundations and Research
  5. Professionalism

Didactic Seminars

Fellows from all six tracks take part in a twice a month professional development seminar. Topics are selected to be appropriate for fellows in all six tracks and cover a broad variety of professional development topics. In addition, separate tracks have their own seminars focused on that track’s specialty area.

Fellowship Handbook

Our fellowship handbook contains information about general policies/procedures as well as clinical experiences, benefits, information about supervision and support for trainees, and evaluation opportunities/procedures. Please note that the fellowship handbook is updated annually and reflects information for the current training year.

Diversity and Inclusion

Diversity is an important part of Nationwide Children's Hospital’s vision and, as an organization, we strive to have our staff be reflective of the communities we serve. At Nationwide Children's, diversity is defined more broadly than the traditional definition of race and/or nationality and includes race, ethnicity, age, gender, socioeconomic status, religious beliefs, family structure, sexual orientation and physical ability. Across the hospital you will see multiple initiatives in line with this value:

  • The hospital has ongoing efforts in their initiative, Stand Against Racism, Stand for Health Equity, led by the hospital's CEO and a diversity steering committee.
  • The hospital also has Employee Resource Groups (ERG’s), which are teams of employees with common backgrounds, goals and interests, formed to act as a cultural resource for both group members and the entire organization.
  • Behavioral Health has its own Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) committee that has members across Behavioral Health.
  • We welcome international students and have had successful international fellows in the past.
