Pediatric Colorectal Fellowship
The Pediatric Colorectal Fellowship is a one- or two-year program. Fellows remaining for a second year will pursue additional research.
The Pediatric Colorectal Fellowship was approved by Nationwide Children's Hospital GMEC in January 2014. Fellowships are 1-2 years in duration. Those remaining for a second year will pursue additional research.
In April 2014, Nationwide Children’s Hospital formed The Center for Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction one of the first centers in the world to formally integrate all specialties involved in providing complete care of the colon and rectum in kids. This environment provides a unique experience for Pediatric Colorectal fellows.
What You Need to Know
Clinical and Research Components
The colorectal fellow’s experience will be in advanced colorectal surgery and collaborating specialties including GI Motility and pelvic reconstruction. The colorectal fellow will have dedicated research time, ongoing participation in data collection and QI projects focused on colorectal surgery in pediatric patients as well as study of optimal curriculum development for pediatric surgical education in the area of colorectal surgery. The colorectal fellow is expected to submit at least one paper for publication.
Trainee’s Supervisory and Patient Care Responsibilities
The colorectal fellow will participate as a teaching assistant for the junior residents. The colorectal fellow will interface with the pediatric surgical service for on call duties and to cover pediatric surgery cases as needed. Otherwise, the fellow will spend time on colorectal cases, colorectal clinic and GI motility cases and urologic/gynecologic reconstruction.
Clinical Procedural Requirements
The colorectal fellow will spend time on colorectal cases, colorectal clinic, and in GI/motility and urologic/gynecologic reconstruction. The pediatric surgery fellow will have primary responsibility for all pediatric surgery index cases in the area of colorectal (primary anorectal and Hirschsprung pull-throughs) and the colorectal fellow will concentrate their clinical time on things esoteric to the general pediatric surgery fellows training, such as redo cases and appendicostomies for fecal incontinence. The colorectal fellow will be able to second assist on any colorectal case.
Didactic Sessions and Teaching Methods
The colorectal fellow will also participate in the robust teaching conferences offered in the pediatric surgery program including morbidity and mortality conference. The colorectal fellow will participate in weekly meetings with the reconstructive and with the motility/fecal incontinence teams, in which case presentations and discussion will be utilized to demonstrate case selection, operative planning, medical management, and identification of complications and pitfalls in order to identify optimal approaches to solving colorectal problems.
Education & Training
Objective: To understand how to evaluate and treat patients with pediatric colorectal problems.
- Understand the newborn assessment of associated malformations and anorectal malformations
- Recognize the different types of anorectal malformations
- Understand the proper newborn radiologic evaluation for anorectal malformations
- Determine the correct newborn surgical intervention in anorectal malformations
- Understand the newborn assessment and treatment of Hirschsprung’s disease
- Develop expertise in the surgical management of index colorectal conditions
- Understand multidisciplinary medical and surgical management for the variety of colorectal problems
- Understand surgical interventions for fecal incontinence
- Understand the assessment of complex Hirschsprung’s disease with postoperative soiling or obstructive symptoms
- Understand the medical and surgical management of intractable idiopathic constipation

Eligibility
Eligible candidates should have completed at least 3 years of general surgery training at an ACGME-approved (or equivalent) general surgical residency.
