Pediatric Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship

Pediatric Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship

The neuromuscular medicine fellowship is a one-year program that is ACGME accredited.

The program is geared toward individuals with prior Pediatric Neurology or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation training. The training program is designed to provide the education needed to be an excellent pediatric neuromuscular medicine practitioner in a range of clinical settings from a small rural practice to a large academic medical center.

After completion of this program, fellows will be proficient in the diagnosis and management of acquired and inherited neuromuscular diseases in both inpatient and outpatient settings, the performance of electrodiagnostic studies, the interpretation of neuromuscular pathology, and the delivery of gene and genetic therapies for neuromuscular diseases.

What You Need to Know

Curriculum

Fellows will rotate at Nationwide Children's Hospital and The Ohio State University. They will spend 4-5 half days per week in outpatient clinics. They will spend 3-4 half days per week in the EMG lab. While in the EMG lab at OSU, they will gain exposure to autonomic testing and neuromuscular ultrasound. The fellows will participate in our weekly biopsy conference where we review all muscle and nerve biopsies done the prior week. The majority of time will be spent in outpatient clinics, but there will be dedicated time for exposure to inpatient consults and electrodiagnostic studies.

Didactic sessions will include weekly neuromuscular journal club, neurology grand rounds, pediatric grand rounds, and weekly sessions for two to three months on NCS/EMG basics and clinical neuromuscular disorders.

Exposure to clinical research will be offered but not required.

Eligibility

Trainees will be selected from candidates who have completed an ACGME-accredited training program in adult or pediatric neurology, medical genetics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, or pediatrics. Preference will be given to candidates who have completed a year of fellowship in an ACGME-accredited Neuromuscular Medicine program, although such prior training is not required. Trainees will be selected based upon demonstrated interest in academic medicine, clinical research, and clinical expertise. Recommendations will be solicited from program instructors in both fellowship and residency programs.
