Congenital Interventional Cardiology Fellowship

Interventional Cardiology Fellowship

Nationwide Children's Hospital offers an advanced fellowship in pediatric and congenital interventional cardiac catheterization for board certified or board eligible pediatric cardiologists pursuing additional training in the technical aspects of cardiac catheterization.

The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Nationwide Children's Hospital is a one to two year training program focused on the technical aspects of cardiac catheterization. Within this advanced training program, a fellow will perform procedures of increasing complexity under the supervision of our highly skilled attending interventional cardiologists. Trainees are expected to gain a greater experience and increasing level of independence within the core competencies, become highly skilled in the technical aspects of cardiac catheterization, and participate in research as they treat a wide variety of patients with complex diagnoses. Trainees from our program go onto full attending and faculty positions as pediatric/congenital interventional cardiologists. Multiple research opportunities exist for our fellows, as they are exposed to a wide variety of patient populations and have faculty support and mentoring throughout the research process.

What You Need to Know

Curriculum

With two busy state of the art biplane labs, the training program provides a multitude of learning opportunities on a daily basis. Our interventional program typically performs 500-550 cases per year with over 67% of cases having at least one intervention performed. The interventional fellow will have hands-on involvement throughout every step of each case, gradually increasing the complexity of their responsibilities as their skills develop. The fellow will have direct exposure to the vast array of procedures and devices that a congenital cardiac catheterization lab has to offer from premature neonatal PDA device closure to transcatheter valve replacement including self-expanding pulmonary valve systems.

Along with pediatric cases, the fellow will treat adult congenital heart disease (ACHD) patients with 20-25% of our cases involving the ACHD population. The training program also includes exposure to 3-D rotational angiography, extended reality virtual procedural simulation, and 3-D intracardiac echocardiography. There are also opportunities for learning outpatient management through the interventional cardiology clinics throughout each month.

An important component of this advanced fellowship is an independent research or QI project, as well as the education of other trainees. Trainees participate in case conferences, didactics, and teaching on a regular basis.
