Anesthesiology Fellowship

Anesthesiology Fellowship

Nationwide Children’s Hospital offers four one-year ACGME accredited fellowship positions in pediatric anesthesiology.

With four accredited positions and over 38,000 anesthetics performed in 2022, fellows at Nationwide Children's Hospital have a unique opportunity for an unparalleled training experience. This clinical volume, coupled with the small number of ACGME fellows, has allowed the department to offer fellows an outstanding clinical experience that is tailored to meet their expectations for a rewarding and challenging fellowship year. Continued clinical growth within the Anesthesiology Department has allowed fellows broader exposure to the numerous challenges of a modern-day pediatric anesthesiologist.

The Anesthesiology Department at Nationwide Children's is committed to providing a robust clinical and educational experience for fellows in an environment that fosters scientific inquiry, research and support. The department remains personable and collegial with fellows and strives to create an atmosphere where fellows are mentored in a stimulating and supportive environment. Over the years, Nationwide Children’s has experienced unprecedented growth in the area of scientific and clinical investigation with the Abigail Wexner Research Institute occupying more than 500,000 square feet of dedicated research space on campus. To date, Nationwide Children’s is one of the largest pediatric research centers in the United States and is ranked among the top 10 for National Institutes of Health funding among free-standing children's hospitals.

Nationwide Children's is the only children’s hospital in the city of Columbus and was ranked in the U.S. News and World Report’s Best Children’s Hospital 2022-2023 Honor Roll—a distinction awarded to only 10 children’s centers in the country. Nationwide Children's is anchored by a state-of-the-art 460-bed patient care tower on the main campus with the onsite ambulatory and main operating room surgical domains, as well as a freestanding surgery center in Westerville.

What You Need to Know

Experience & Schedule

The pediatric anesthesiology fellowship is 12 months in duration. During this time, fellows will have a clinical rotation schedule, a research project and a quality improvement project.

The bulk of the year is spent in the main operating rooms with a minimum of two months spent in the cardiac operating rooms and cardiac catheterization suites. Fellows will also have rotations devoted to regional anesthesia, acute/chronic pain, PACU and remote anesthesia (predominately in various radiology suites).

Fellows are expected to participate in a research project during their fellowship with the intent of presenting at the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiology and/or the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia or another meeting of commensurate standing. Fellows will also complete a quality improvement project during their fellowship as per ACGME guidelines.
