Pediatric Psychology Fellowships: 2025-2026

Functional Neurological Disorder Fellowship

This fellowship will emphasize clinical training in the assessment and treatment of youth who present with a wide range of functional symptoms including functional seizures, generalized weakness, gait difficulties, functional tics and sensory issues. Training experiences include participation in the multidisciplinary Psychogenic Nonepileptic Event (PNEE) Clinic, inpatient consultation, and targeted outpatient treatment. Fellows will have the opportunity to collaborate with multiple medical services including Neurology, Hospital Pediatrics, Rheumatology, and Physical Medicine. In addition to traditional cognitive behavioral therapy principles, fellows will have the opportunity to utilize biofeedback, motivational interviewing, habit reversal training, and dialectical behavioral principals to improve distress tolerance. Chronic Pediatric Pain Fellowship

This fellowship will emphasize clinical training in the assessment and treatment of chronic pain in children, adolescents, and their families. A range of training experiences will be available and include the Intensive Pain Rehabilitation and Education Program, inpatient consultation, and interdisciplinary clinics, such as the Comprehensive Pain Management Clinic, the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Disease Clinic, Headache Clinic, and Burn Clinic. Within these varied settings, fellows will gain experience working with diverse medical conditions, including sickle cell disease, rheumatologic disorders, orthopedic conditions, headaches, and other organic and functional pain problems. There will also be opportunities to work with specific functional pain populations on an outpatient basis from multiple referral sources utilizing biofeedback. Fellows will be able to design their experiences based on 3-month, 6-month, and year-long rotations according to specified interests and career goals. Opportunities are available to assist in facilitating the Comfort Ability Program, which is designed to teach kids and parents skills for managing chronic pain conditions. Development of clinical programming and research will be available through each specialty area dependent on applicant’s previous experience and interests.

Comprehensive GI Fellowship

The fellow in this track will gain experience in a broad array of pediatric gastroenterological conditions including working with functional GI disorders (e.g., Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Functional Abdominal Pain, Functional Constipation, Rumination Syndrome), and organic GI illness (e.g., Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Short Bowel Syndrome, Eosinophilic Esophagitis, Food Allergy, Liver-related conditions). Fellows also have the opportunity to rotate through the Comprehensive Pediatric Feeding Program. Fellows will engage in treatment across outpatient, integrated medical clinic, and inpatient consultation settings. Training includes use of cognitive-behavioral, acceptance-based, and motivational interviewing approaches in the treatment of GI disorders. This fellowship allows for both breadth and depth of GI psychology related training, with flexibility for some specialization in areas of particular interest if applicable. Fellows on this track will work closely with both the Division of Pediatric Psychology, GI Psychology team and the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Nationwide Children's Hospital.

Endocrinology/Healthy Weight Fellowship

This fellowship will be split between Endocrinology and The Center for Healthy Weight and Nutrition (CHWN), providing an opportunity to work with patients diagnosed with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and obesity in medical clinics and outpatient settings. An opportunity to provide inpatient consultation and liaison care for the Endocrinology service is available based on fellow interest. Typical consults to the Endocrinology service include chronic non-adherence and new onset of diabetes. The CHWN is a multidisciplinary tertiary care subspecialty clinic comprised of medical providers, physical therapists, dieticians, psychology, and social work. The fellow will be present in the multidisciplinary medical weight management clinic within the CHWN providing integrated care to patients and families. The fellow will carry an outpatient caseload referred from both CHWN and Endocrinology. Additional training experiences include providing consultation to Pediatric Medical Residents and Fellows in these clinics. There may be opportunities for involvement with Adolescent Medicine inpatients and medical clinic populations, as well as opportunities to develop innovative group treatments for children and adolescents who present with both disordered eating and obesity.

Hematology/Oncology/BMT Fellowship

This position will focus on clinical work in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT. Clinical activities will include working with children, teens, and young adults undergoing treatment for cancer, BMT, and hematological disorders. Annually, the service provides care for approximately 200 newly diagnosed oncology patients, 400 patients with sickle cell disease, 400 patients with hemophilia, patients with other bleeding disorders, and patients who undergo a BMT, cellular therapies and gene therapy. Fellows have an opportunity to have an individually-tailored experience across disease groups and presenting problems. The fellowship will include training in conducting psychological assessments on inpatients newly diagnosed with cancer and hematological disorders; psychotherapy for outpatients; and screening and brief intervention in the context of multidisciplinary clinics. Fellows will also participate in clinical research and program development.

NICU/ Early Childhood Fellowship

This position is designed to train future psychologists in perinatal mental health, family-centered care, and early childhood sequelae stemming from neonatal medical concerns. This includes developmental care, caregiver mental health, infant-caregiver attachment behavior, early parenting, end of life care, and staff education/support. The fellow serves across multiple settings to provide training across the spectrum from initial NICU admission through transitioning home and later developmental/behavioral concerns, including feeding. The fellow will spend approximately 60% of their time in NICU providing family support interventions, 25% with early feeding clinic and outpatient interventions, and 15% outpatient brief consultation and interventions through the early developmental follow up clinic.

Critical Care Fellowship

This fellowship will focus on working with children and families who are seen within the critical care and medically complex settings. Experiences will include working with acute and chronic medical populations in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and other specialty medical floors, focusing on adjustment to new diagnoses (e.g., burn injury, poly-trauma, traumatic brain injury, cardiac conditions, and spinal cord injury), ongoing management of chronic conditions, and end of life issues. Fellows will be involved in the inpatient consultation and liaison service as well as interdisciplinary medical clinics (could include clinics in areas such as Burn/Trauma, Surgery, etc.). They will also carry an outpatient caseload, with flexibility in specialization and interest. Psychology is routinely involved in interdisciplinary patient care and well-integrated into medical teams.

Pediatric Feeding and Related Disorders Fellowship

Fellows will have the opportunity to work with medically and developmentally complex patients with GI problems, particularly feeding difficulties. Patient age ranges from birth to mid-teens, with the largest proportion being children 8 years or younger. A significant portion of the fellow’s time will be spent in the Comprehensive Pediatric Feeding and Swallowing Program. Fellows will participate in a transdisciplinary team, completing diagnostic assessment and providing treatment as part of the Intensive Feeding Track. They will also provide outpatient treatment while collaborating with other disciplines. Based on interest, there are also opportunities to participate in Bowel Management Clinic, Disorder of Gut-Brain Interaction (DGBI), rumination, and general GI inpatient consults. Applicants with a background in behavior management and parent training will be a good fit for this position, but previous experience working directly with patients with gastrointestinal or feeding challenges is not required.

Primary Care Fellowship

This fellow will join a growing team of psychologists who have been integrated into the Nationwide Children's Hospital Primary Care Network for the past 8 years. The team is comprised of 8 psychologists and 6 master’s level providers integrated into 8 of the 14 Nationwide Children's primary care clinics. The fellow will spend the majority of time with attending psychologists in integrated primary care settings, but will also have the option to have a minor rotating experiences in outpatient medical clinics. Our primary care clinics serve a diverse patient population including immigrant and refugee populations, particularly Latinx, Somali, and Nepali families. For applicants seeking additional support in conducting services in Spanish, bilingual supervision and training can be offered. Our model is highly integrated, emphasizing rapid consultation and intervention during medical appointments, while also offering short-term follow-up interventions for some patients. Fellows are trained to serve a broad range of ages (0-21) and presenting concerns. The fellow will also receive interprofessional, team-based training experiences with pediatric medical residents. There will also be opportunities for assessment with the primary care setting, research, program development, and community outreach.
