Training Goals and Objectives
Overall Goal
Competencies: Demonstrate high standards of professional competence while working with patients with pediatric otolaryngologic disorders.
The following competencies that should be demonstrated by the fellow include:
Provide family-centered patient care that is compassionate, development- and age-appropriate, and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health.
Assess the developmental level of the child as well as social and cultural needs of the pediatric otolaryngologic patient and his/her family during the initial evaluation in the outpatient, inpatient and emergency setting, while taking the time to answer questions and including the patient and family in decision making process for management.
Understand the scope of established and evolving biomedical, clinical, epidemiological and social-behavioral knowledge needed by a pediatric otolaryngologist; demonstrate the ability to acquire, critically interpret and apply this knowledge to patient care.
Demonstrate an understanding of the triage of pediatric otolaryngologic patients to inpatient admission, emergent operation or radiologic evaluation or outpatient follow up.
Demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for continuous self-assessment, using scientific methods and evidence to investigate, evaluate, and improve one’s patient care practice.
Evaluate patient care practices, discuss how they meet local and national standards, and develop ways to improve these practices.
Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in information exchange and partnering with patients, their families and professional associates.
Carefully listen to patients to assess the patient’s health problems including their verbal and non-verbal communications.
Demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles and sensitivity to diversity.
Demonstrate respect, compassion, integrity, punctuality, reliability, and honesty with regards to patients and colleagues.
Understand how to practice high-quality health care and advocate for patients within the context of the health care system.
Demonstrate the knowledge of different types of medical practice and health care delivery systems and understand how this affects their patient care.
Subspecialty Goal
Diagnose and manage patients with the following pediatric otolaryngologic uncommon and complex congenital and acquired conditions including but not limited to:
- Congenital and acquired disorders of airway
- Laryngopharyngeal and gastroesophageal reflux
- Inflammatory and infectious diseases of airway
- Cleft lip and palate
- Acute and chronic rhinosinusitis in children and its complications
- Congenital masses of sinonasal tract in children
- Evaluation of childhood sensorineural hearing loss
- Audiologic testing and rehabilitation in children with hearing loss
- Cochlear implantation in children
- Congenital malformation of the temporal bone
- Congenital, benign and malignant head and neck masses in children
- Inflammatory and infectious diseases of neck in children
- Salivary gland disorders in children
- Vascular malformation of head and neck in children
- Common syndromes and genetic disorders involving head and neck in children
