Brain Growth Across Childhood: Recruiting 8- to 21-Year-Olds for FACT Study

First Posted: December

Other Study ID Number(s): FACT

What Is the Purpose of This Study?

The FACT study, or Functional Activation in Children and Teens: Neuroimaging of Healthy Neurodevelopment, will look at how the brain changes across childhood and adolescence. Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital want to learn more about how the changes in child and adolescent brains impact their behavior, problem-solving skills and ability to control their emotions.

Who Can Take Part in This Study?

Children and adolescents, ages 11 to 17, with at least one parent/guardian, are eligible to participate. The child or adolescent and their parent/guardian must be able to read and understand English fluently, and the child or adolescent must have no history of chronic or longlasting illness.

What Will Happen During This Study?

Participants will visit the main campus of Nationwide Children’s one time. The study will last about four hours. During that time, they will complete:

  • Questionnaires (child or adolescent and their parent/guardian)
  • Tests to see how they solve problems, use language and recognize emotions
  • MRI or imaging scan to look at brain structure and which parts of the brain are involved in different types of activities

Will We Be Paid for This Study?

Yes, both the child or adolescent and their parent/guardian will be compensated for their time.
