Researchers Looking for Pre-Teens and Teens to Study Iron Levels and Menstrual Health

Phase: Recruiting

First Posted: April

Condition(s): Menstrual Health

What Is the Purpose of This Study?

This study aims to better understand what normal menstrual bleeding looks like in young teens to help doctors spot abnormal patterns early and improve reproductive health. By tracking periods and testing for iron levels over two years, researchers will identify common bleeding patterns and risk factors for iron deficiency to guide future screening and care.

Who Can Take Part in This Study?

Pre-teens and teens who are within 6 months of having their first period (menses)

What Will Happen During This Study?

Participants will:

  • Track their menstrual patterns using the Teen Period (T-Dot) app over 2 years
  • Complete online (virtual) study visits every six months
  • Have four blood draws to text iron levels at the beginning of the study, then 8 months, 16 months and 24 months. Blood draws will be done in the participant's home.

T-Dot is an Android- and iOS-based mobile app developed at Nationwide Children’s Hospital capable of collecting and directly transferring patient-level information to clinical researchers via HIPAA-compliant services.

Will We Be Paid for This Study?

Yes, participants will be compensated for their time.
