Pathophysiology of Asthma-induced Critical Illness
Phase: Recruiting
First Posted: September
Condition(s): Asthma
Other Study ID Number(s): PACI
What Is the Purpose of This Study?
This study, called PACI (Pathophysiology of Asthma-induced Critical Illness), wants to learn more about how the immune system reacts during asthma attacks in children. Researchers will look at how these immune responses affect symptoms and hospital visits. They’ll also study how the immune system changes after children receive steroid treatment. The goal is to help improve future asthma care based on how each child’s immune system responds.
Who Can Join This Study?
Children can take part if they:
- Are 18 years old or younger.
- Come to the emergency room with an asthma attack or wheezing.
Children cannot take part if they:
- Have other long-term health conditions (not asthma).
- Have a care plan that limits treatment.
Have a weak immune system or are taking medications that affect the immune system (like chemotherapy or transplant drugs).
What Will Happen During This Study?
- The study will happen only at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, in the emergency room or inpatient units.
- A research team member will talk to families, explain the study, and ask for permission to join. If the child is old enough, they’ll also be asked to agree.
- If the family agrees: A small blood sample will be taken through an IV. A nasal swab will be collected. Families can also choose to give a saliva sample or nasal wash.
- The child will still get regular asthma treatment from the hospital team.
- Families will be paid for participating.
- Each sample will be labeled with a code, and personal information will be removed.
- Samples will be tested to look at immune cells and viruses.
- Researchers will also compare the sample results with medical records to look for patterns.
Can Families Choose to Join or Leave the Study?
- Yes, joining the study is completely up to the family.
Families can leave the study at any time. If they do, their samples will be thrown away and their data will be removed.
