Histopathology Core

The Histopathology Core provides exceptional services to internal investigators, including laboratory procedures in histology and electron microscopy.

The Histopathology Core is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Laboratory and Biorepository Accreditation Program and certified by CLIA for clinical testing. Research support includes handling and processing of solid tissues from patients and animal models with the following services:

  • Tissue fixation and paraffin embedding
  • Paraffin block or frozen tissue sectioning (unstained slides and tissue scrolls)
  • H&E and other chemical staining
  • Direct and indirect immunohistochemical staining
  • Selected special stains
  • RNase-free handling
  • Tissue microarray (TMA) construction
  • Transmission EM procedures including fixation, embedding, sectioning, and visualization
  • Whole slide imaging of glass slides can be coordinated with the Biopathology Center Processing and Banking Core.

The Histopathology Core Laboratory is equipped with a variety of instrumentation to create and provide quality biospecimens for research.

  • Microtomes and an Ultra microtome
  • Cryostats
  • Autostainer
  • TMA arrayers

Transmission Electron Microscopy

The Histopathology Core provides services to obtain high resolution images of biological specimens.

  • Hitachi H-7650 Transmission Electron Microscope with two digital cameras
    • Magnification ranges from 0.7K up to 200K
    • AMtv542 imaging software
