USA-China Agricultural Injury Research Training Project Success Stories

The overall goal of the USA-China Agricultural Injury Research Training Project is to increase training and research related to agricultural injuries in China. In order to achieve this goal, short-term training of Chinese scholars interested in agricultural injury research was conducted in both the United States and in agricultural regions of China in collaboration with the Injury Control Research Center at the Tongji School of Public Health, Wuhan, China, the Colorado Injury Control Research Center (CICRC) at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado and the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Training Chinese scientists in the United States has been an important part of the success of the project. Chinese researchers have been able to work alongside faculty at the Colorado Injury Control Research Center and the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital. By working with U.S. faculty members, researchers from China obtain first-hand knowledge regarding injury research study design, data collection and statistical analysis, report and manuscript preparation, IRB procedures and other ethical issues in the responsible conduct of injury research. The English-based academic environment substantially increases their technical writing and speaking skills in the English language. This program also provides seed money for trainees to continue their research at home when they return. Between 2009-2011, the USA-China Agricultural Injury Research Training Project hosted six Chinese researchers at the two U.S. injury control research centers.
