While enjoying the summer weather can mean going outdoors and getting active, it is important to keep in mind that exposure to the sun and heat can lead to serious injuries. To keep your child safe this summer, remember to take the following precautions.
- The sun is strongest between 10 am and 4 pm. Limit the amount of time children spend outside during this time of day.
- Apply sunscreen, even on cloudy days. Make sure to apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply the sunscreen every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating. Children younger than 6 years should use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30. Infants under 6 months can be sensitive to sunscreen. It is best to keep them out of the direct sunlight.
- Make sure your child drinks plenty of water during the day to stay hydrated. When being active outside, your child should drink at least 5 ounces of cold water every 20 minutes, even if he does not feel thirsty.
- Be aware that cars can reach very high temperatures in the sun. On a summer day, the temperature inside a car can rise over 30 degrees Fahrenheit in just 15 minutes, even with the windows rolled down two inches. Never leave your child alone in the car, even for a minute.
