Mortality of Juvenile Justice Involved Youth

A retrospective longitudinal population-based study assessed mortality rates and cause of death among youth previously incarcerated in the juvenile legal system. Youth with a history of incarceration were significantly more likely to experience early mortality compared to Medicaid-enrolled youth. Delinquency and violence prevention strategies that incorporate a culturally informed approach and consider sex and developmental level are critical.

Precipitating Circumstance of Incarcerated Youth

Using a nationally representative sample, this study examined characteristics and precipitating circumstances of suicide deaths among incarcerated youth. Results suggest unique aspects of the incarceration environment may be associated with an elevated risk of suicide and support the need for improved suicide prevention interventions for this setting.
