Research at IMBHR Summer Experience (RISE)

Nationwide Children’s Hospital is delighted to announce the Research at IMBHR Summer Experience (RISE) program starting in June 2026. RISE provides exceptional summer opportunities for undergraduate, postbaccalaureate and graduate students. It will run for 10 weeks from June to August 2026.

Our research mentorship faculty is comprised of over 6 NIH-funded principal investigators. Participants will be situated within a dynamic ecosystem of pipeline programs spanning research internships through T32-funded post-doctoral programs.

The Curriculum Will Include:

  1. An immersive summer experience in a research team working with neuropsychological, mental, and behavioral health data.
  2. Learning about data capture (including in electronic medical records, as well as in structured survey tools and using AI).
  3. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses  some of the most cited, high impact research one could do!
  4. Assignment of a postdoctoral or faculty mentor to support readiness for further studies.
  5. Weekly research seminars and professional development workshops on active research projects, psychology graduate school and medical school applications, test preparation, interviewing and other relevant topics.
  6. Didactics about data wrangling, checking statistical assumptions, analysis, visualization, and presentation of findings.

Research Experience the Program Offers

Research experiences will include meaningful mentored projects that build skills and produce a product suitable for presentation at the close of the internship. Each intern will have the opportunity to work on a research project suitable for submission to a regional or national conference on which they can be first author.

12 Students Will Be Selected for Each Summer Program

  • Undergraduates: will have completed their sophomore or junior year with a GPA of ≥ 3.3 with a psychology, neuroscience, biostatistics, computer science major
  • Post-baccalaureate: will have graduated with a psychology, neuroscience, biostatistics, computer science major
  • Graduate students: will be enrolled in a doctoral program and eligible to work in the summer.

Participants Will Receive a Stipend

Program participants receive between $15-18/hour, depending on education level and experience, for 40 hours of work per week. This equates to a summer stipend of $6000 to $7200 over 10 weeks. Additional financial support will be provided for travel to and from the program for participants living outside the central Ohio area.

Accepted students could also attend the Future Directions Forum with registration covered.

This Program Encourages Applications From:

  • Students from groups historically excluded in medicine and biomedical sciences: African-American or Black, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander
  • Students from economically and/or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds
  • First-generation college students
  • LGBTQIA, Transgender/Gender Non-Conforming
  • Others whose backgrounds and experiences would bring diversity to the field
