Kelly Lab
The Kelly Laboratory is focused on improving the care of children born with congenital heart disease, with a particular interest in single ventricle heart disease. Patients with single ventricle heart typically require three open heart surgeries before 4 years of age, in what is termed Fontan palliation. While Fontan palliation is lifesaving, we now appreciate patients cannot expect a normal quality and duration of life. The dual appointment of John Kelly, MD, as a pediatric cardiologist and principal investigator in the Center for Regenerative Medicine allows for conduction of research along the translational continuum. Current projects focus on the development of a chronic large animal model of Fontan palliation to evaluate curative solutions for single ventricle heart disease and to study the end-organ complications induced by Fontan hemodynamics. Additionally, Dr Kelly is the co-director of the Pediatric Fontan clinic concentrated on standardizing and advancing the management of patients living with Fontan physiology.
