Critical Illness and Injury Interdisciplinary Research Group (CI3RG)
The Critical Illness and Injury Interdisciplinary Research Group (CI3RG) is focused on increasing the breadth and depth of research at Nationwide Children's Hospital centered on critical illness and injury. The CI3RG aims to facilitate collaboration among investigators throughout Nationwide Children's and across OSU campus by cross-pollination of research spanning diverse methodologies, with the ultimate goal of bridging investigation from the cell to the community. Active research areas include sepsis, traumatic brain injury, transfusion biology, burn injuries, immune defense against infections, acute lung injury, health equity and global health. Research activities range from laboratory investigation, translational studies, to clinical trials that are housed both at Nationwide Children's Hospital and embedded within national collaborative networks.
Our Mission
To foster collaborative, interdisciplinary science in critical illness and injury discovery.
Our Goals
- Enhance collaborative research in critical illness and injury at Nationwide Children's Hospital with a focus on bridging the gap between basic and clinical scientists.
- Increase collaboration between investigators at Nationwide Children's Hospital and OSU to leverage the unique strengths at each institution.
- Foster the development and retention of the next generation of critical illness and injury scientists.
Our Activities
The monthly seminar series includes a range of presenters, including local investigators and invited speakers from other institutions. Presentations are both formal and informal “work-in-progress” talks that are geared to solicit input and ideas from a broad audience. The ultimate goal is to enhance collaboration and provide exposure to the breadth of critical illness and injury research.
Small pilot awards will support innovative “high-risk, high-reward” projects that ideally represent new collaborations. The goal of this program is to generate preliminary data that will support new extramural grant applications.
Based on the Advanced Research Curriculum established in the Division of Critical Care Medicine at Nationwide Children's Hospital, this program is geared toward trainees and junior faculty that are interested in developing research-intensive careers. Investigators in any discipline related to critical illness and injury are encouraged to participate. Mentorship is provided by senior investigators from a number of clinical divisions and research centers at Nationwide Children's. Monthly meetings will include “work-in-progress” talks by participants and didactic sessions centered around scientific career development (e.g. scientific writing and presentations, data management and analysis, building a scientific career).
