Signs of Suicide (SOS)

The CSPR partners with schools to offer the SOS prevention program as an evidenced-based option for youth suicide prevention programing. SOS is a nationally recognized suicide prevention program developed by Mindwise Innovations and enhanced through partnership with the CSPR. SOS raises awareness of suicide, teaches students about risk factors for depression and suicide, provides students with ways to access support, and provides suicide and depression screening for youth in the school. Outcomes for SOS include a significant decrease in student suicide attempts and increase in the ability of staff and students to identify signs and symptoms of depression as well as respond in a way that keeps students safe.

Licensed mental health clinicians from the CSPR offer support in training for school staff, counselors, and families on how to recognize and support students who are at risk. They collaborate on planning, education, and consultation for SOS programming, screening, and risk assessment processes to identify and respond to at-risk students participating in the program. CSPR’s support for SOS programming is provided at no cost to schools in the central and southeast Ohio region.

Be Present Ohio: The Online Experience (BPO:XP)

BPO:XP is a self-paced web-based universal primary suicide prevention and education program for 7th -12th graders. BPO:XP emphasizes engagement through dynamic videos that teach youth about mental health and the warning signs of suicide , ways to support each other, tips to talk about mental health, how to cope and reach out for help during hard times, interactive learning elements, and a customizable avatar. Upon completion of the program, youth will be presented with a personalized “Cope Ahead Plan” to remind them of the skills they learned through the program. BPO:XP can be completed on computers, smartphones or tablets with large or small groups of youth in schools or community settings with reliable internet access. It does not include screening for suicidality and does not serve as a replacement to treatment or as a diagnostic tool. Caring Contacts
Caring Contacts Program

As part of Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s commitment to a Zero Suicide mission, the CSPR created a program that sends a series of 19 caring messages over the course of a year to youth who have been treated for suicidal thoughts or behaviors in several of our acute Behavioral Health services. After a patient leaves care for a suicidal crisis, they remain at elevated risk for re-attempt or re-hospitalization. However,  Caring Contacts program will intervene via text messages to teens by providing support and encouragement and providing appropriate and accessible crisis resources. The Caring Contacts program continues to expand to other healthcare sites thanks to generous support and funding from Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.

If interested in using our images, learning more about Caring Contacts, or adopting it inrecent research suggests that sending messages to patients who have experienced suicidal thoughts or behaviors through caring letters, postcards, or telephone calls may reduce suicide attempts, suicidal behavior, and emergency department utilization. Our Caring Contacts program helps to bridge the gap in care after a patient receives treatment for concerns of suicidality and has been discharged from a behavioral health unit.
