International Training Program
According to the World Health Organization:
- Each year, there are over 800,000 injury-related deaths globally among children younger than 18 years of age
- Tens of millions of children require hospital care due to injuries annually
- 90% of the world's pediatric deaths from injuries occur in low- and middle-income countries
The International Training Program of the Center for Injury Research and Policy (CIRP) seeks to decrease the burden of injury mortality and morbidity worldwide. The program has three objectives:
- To sponsor a six-month training program for safety and injury research scholars from the developing world in safety promotion and injury research methods
- To create an international injury speakers program at the Center for Injury Research and Policy
- To collaborate on injury research with investigators in the developing world
Visiting Injury Scholars
The International Visiting Scholars Program was established in 2004 as part of the International Training Program in Injury Research. Selected scholars are matched with a CIRP faculty member who serves as their mentor. Scholars apply for a non-immigrant visiting scholar visa and are expected to sign an agreement stating their intent to return to their home country. Scholars receive in-depth training in injury research methodology and have the opportunity to pursue research projects with the goal of publishing in U.S. peer-reviewed journals.
International Injury Speakers
In order to enhance global scientific exchange, the International Training Program in Injury Research invites injury experts working in the developing world to Columbus, Ohio for academic exchanges in injury research and safety promotion.
