Jason Newland

Jason Newland, MD, MEd, FPIDS, is the division chief of pediatric infectious diseases at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, a professor of pediatrics and the Henry G Cramblett Chair in Medicine at The Ohio State University. He grew up in Altus, OK and is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in 2000. He completed his pediatric residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and pediatric infectious diseases fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Prior to joining Nationwide Children’s Hospital, he spent 10 years at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, MO and 8 years at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

His research spotlights the use of antimicrobials and the impact of an antimicrobial stewardship program at children’s hospitals. In 2013, he co-founded the Sharing Antimicrobial Reports for Pediatric Stewardship (SHARPS) Collaborative, comprised of more than 70 children’s hospitals that focuses on establishing best practices for the use of antimicrobials in children. He currently is leading a multi-centered study funded by AHRQ R18 on the best de-implementation strategies to eliminate unnecessary post-operative antibiotics. He has performed community engaged research during the COVID-19 Pandemic assessing testing strategies and the best strategies to increase the uptake of COVID-19 vaccine. His research team is dedicated to working in our communities and improving health for children and their families.

Jamee works as a clinical research coordinator in the Newland Lab. Jamee is a graduate of Southern University and A&M College, earning her bachelor's degree in biology in 2002. She began her career as an educator teaching science for many years before transitioning into research during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her community work has been in COVID-19 testing and vaccine hesitancy studies in underserved communities. Her clinical work has been COVID-19, MPox and RSV treatment studies. Jamee is passionate about giving back to the community and making an impact in the world. She is interested in working to close the gap that contributes to health disparities in underserved communities.

Lauren Walsh, MPH

Lauren is a research coordinator for the Newland Lab. She graduated in 2020 from Saint Louis University College for Public Health and Social Justice with her master of public health with a concentration in maternal and child health. She has been a research coordinator for the past four years, working in pediatric infectious diseases and gastroenterology. She has worked on NIH funded research studies about Staphylococcus aureus and infant gut microbiome. Lauren is interested in how the environment plays a role in health outcomes.

Tyler Walsh, MPH

Tyler is a team lead for the Newland Lab. He graduated from Saint Louis University in 2020 earning his Master of Public Health with a focus in epidemiology and biosecurity and disaster preparedness. After graduation he worked at a local health department in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and moved into research with Dr. Newland as the lead research coordinator for a COVID-19 testing study funded by the NIH. The study partnered with St. Louis area schools dedicated to teaching students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). He has also helped coordinate other studies related to COVID-19 testing, COVID-19 vaccines and qualitative research in the St. Louis area. Additionally, he has led practicum students during summer research programs and internships. Tyler's experiences have helped him develop research interests in infectious diseases, health equity and vulnerable populations and find a passion for working with and helping students.
