Pediatric Trauma and Burn Research Affinity Group

Mission

There is a critical need for clinical and translational science that develops, rigorously examines, and facilitates implementation of the most promising trauma and burn care treatments that will impact clinical care and improve speedy recovery. The mission of the Pediatric Trauma and Burn Research Affinity Group (PTB-RAG) at Nationwide Children's Hospital is to facilitate team science and innovative pilot studies by establishing multidisciplinary collaborations. We act together to develop content expertise in quantitative advanced statistical methodologies, translational data analytics based on medical records, sample size calculation and power estimation, and study protocol design of multi-site clinical trials. The PTB-RAG interdisciplinary team is composed of Nationwide Children's Hospital trauma and burn clinical care physicians and nurses, nationally and internationally recognized patient-centered outcome researchers, experts of IT Research and Innovation, and OSU statisticians, biostatistical and large data analytics experts. The major goals of the PTB-RAG are to develop research projects, publish peer-reviewed papers, and support pilot projects to collect preliminary data for extramural grant applications.

Through bi-monthly research and educational meetings, visiting lectures, and in-depth specific project meetings, we are contributing to the profile of translational and clinical research across a wide variety of clinical specialties and research centers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, The Ohio State University, and beyond. PTB-RAG is well aligned with the existing hospital clinical programs, research thematic areas, and future strategic priorities of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital, the Abigail Wexner Research Institute, The Ohio State University, and federal funding agencies.

Goals and Activities

Ongoing Research Meetings

The research meetings will occur on a bi-monthly basis alternating between trauma and burn topics, supplemented by project specific meetings and semi-annual planning meetings.

Study Design and Statistical Support

PTB-RAG affiliated statisticians and biostatistical experts will provide consultation for study design of clinical trials and research projects based on existing medical records. Priority will be given to projects with potential to lead to extramural grants.

Pilot Translational and Clinical Study Support

Resources and personnel will be negotiated and made available for pilot studies that aim for collecting preliminary data for an extramural grant submission.

Collaborative Grant Submissions

Members of PTB-RAG proactively collaborate to explore grant submission opportunities. Key staff members of PTB-RAG coordinate the grant writing and submission activities.

Invited Speakers

Local and national experts in trauma and burn research are invited to visit and present at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute of Nationwide Children’s Hospital or at the bi-monthly PTB-RAG meetings via virtual meetings.

Summer Student Researchers

PTB-RAG hosts promising high school, undergraduate, and medical students each year to work on projects supervised by one or more PTB-RAG faculty to encourage them to conduct short-term summer research (6-8 weeks) in the areas of trauma and burn epidemiological and translational research. Funding sources and financial support for Summer Student Researchers vary.
