The Center for Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction (CCPR) is leading the way in providing high quality care for children diagnosed with colorectal conditions. Studies show that there is a direct correlation between the number of patients a clinical program sees and high-quality outcomes they can deliver to their patients.
At Nationwide Children’s, every child diagnosed with a colorectal or pelvic condition is handled with an individualized treatment plan. Because of the complexity of many conditions, some children require care throughout their life. Our team is committed to providing optimal outcomes and quality of life from newborns, through potty training, puberty, sexual function and childbearing.
About
The Center for Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction is one of the first centers in the world to formally integrate all specialties involved in providing complete care of the colon and rectum in kids, joining the teams for Colorectal Surgery, Gastroenterology, Gynecology, and Urology. Over the past year, the center performed nearly 1,000 colorectal procedures and patients have reach out to us for help from 50 states and 64 countries from around the world.
Further reinforcing our commitment and expertise in treating pediatric colorectal conditions, Richard Wood, MD, leads the team. Also leading the clinical team is Daniel DaJusta, MD, CCPR Urology Director, Geri Hewitt, MD, CCPR Gynecological Director, and Desale Yacob, MD, GI Medical Director.
Our cross-functional team treats all types of functional and surgical colorectal conditions including:
- Anorectal malformations / imperforate anus
- Cloacal Malformations
- Encopresis/idiopathic constipation
- Fecal incontinence
- Hirschsprung disease
- Motility disorders
The team conducts a weekly collaborative conference, for patients with functional problems and reconstructive needs, and creates custom treatment plans for each patient.

CCPR Center Directors
Richard J. Wood
Richard Wood, MBChB, FCPS(SA), serves as chief for the Department of Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction and program director for the three fellowships at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and is Professor of Surgery at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Wood’s has a clinical interest in complex pelvic reconstructive surgery, including anorectal malformations, cloacal malformations, Hirschsprung disease and the surgical management of severe constipation.
Daniel G. DaJusta
Daniel G. DaJusta, MD, is a board certified urologist and a member of the Section of Pediatric Urology at Nationwide Children's Hospital and Clinical Assistant Professor of Urology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Universidade Federal Do Ceará, Faculdade de Medicina in Fortaleza, CE, Brazil and completed a urology residency at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, followed by a two-year pediatric urology fellowship at Children's Medical Center Dallas.
Geri D. Hewitt
Geri D. Hewitt, MD, is the Chief of Gynecology and Obstetrics and the Director of Gynecologic Surgery for the Center for Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
Desalegn T. Yacob
Desale Yacob, MD, is an attending pediatric gastroenterologist, Medical Director of the Motility Center and Director of Gastroenterology and Motility for the Center for Colorectal and Pelvic Reconstruction at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
Bowel Management Program
The Bowel Management Program is a week-long program for children dealing with constipation and the inability to control stool when it needs to stay inside or leave the body. This is called fecal incontinence, soiling, or having “an accident.” Most patients that enter the Bowel Management Program experience incontinence issues related to:
- Previously repaired anorectal malformations or Hirschsprung disease
- Spinal or sacral disorders that affect the bowel (spina bifida, myelomeningocele, absent sacrum, sacrococcygeal teratoma)
- Motility disorders and those with severe constipation (encopresis)
Patients and families will end the week equipped with:
- An understanding of how continence works
- Information on why some children soil
- A customized, and proven, treatment plan for each child

Meet Our Patients
