Principal Investigator
Timothy P. Cripe, MD, PhD, is a principal investigator in the Center for Childhood Cancer in The Research Institute and chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation at Nationwide Children's Hospital. His lab's current research focuses on developing and testing new, targeted therapies for pediatric solid tumors and translating those findings into clinical studies. Dr. Cripe and his team investigate the use of viruses that selectively infect and kill cancer cells, study their utility for killing cancer stem cells, and were among the first in the country to launch clinical trials of attenuated viruses in children.

I am proud dad of 2 sons, Eli age 14 and Zach age 18. I have been married to my beautiful wife Angela for 23 years. I graduated from the University of Mississippi (BS) and Miami University (MS). I have served as Dr. Cripe's lab manager for 19 years. I have spent my 25 year career involved clinical trials as well running pre-clinical trials in mouse tumor models. My goal is to find and help develop a novel biotherapeutic agent that is efficacious against refractory pediatric solid tumors such as alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS) and osteosarcoma (OS).

I joined Cripe lab in Sept. 2008 as a research fellow, and I have explored new treatment strategies mainly for pediatric solid tumors and to overcome barriers to oHSV therapy for pediatric malignancies. My main project is one of the directions I pursue to circumvent the lack of the entry receptor barrier via the “directed evolution” strategy to develop more potent oHSV vectors. Part of my most recent work in the Cripe Lab is focused on understanding the role of both the innate and adaptive immune system in oHSV virotherapy. I am experienced in overseeing research including development of long-term goals, budget management, training of personnel, experimental design, data interpretation, and final preparation of manuscripts.

My name is Brooke Nartker and I'm a Research Associate. You can often find me in the vivarium performing combination studies with HSV1 or in the tissue culture room performing in-vitro studies. I am very interested in the HSV1 clinical trials which actually pushed me to go to nursing school. I love that I get to see the research and clinical side of medicine and can't wait to see what the future holds for the Cripe lab.
