The Biopathology Center has a number of resources available including specimen access, facilities, and training tools.

In order to access specimens from the Biopathology Center, you will need to complete an application and Data Use Agreement. The application will provide us with your contact information and specific tissue request. Please note that the Agreement must be signed by yourself and someone who is authorized to sign for your agency. Also, you will need to submit your project description (1-2 pages) and your current IRB approval along with the application. The Data Use Agreement must also be signed and returned. This document is needed for HIPAA compliance.
The BPC works with several cooperative groups, which may require supplemental applications and/or Material Transfer Agreements to be completed and returned along with the aforementioned application and Data Use Agreement.
Your request will undergo review once we have the necessary documents. This review takes approximately 4 weeks, and we will send you an approval letter once your request is approved. We will also contact you if our reviewers have any questions or concerns regarding your application.
In order to access additional specimens from the Biopathology Center, you will need to complete a Tissue Update Form. The form will provide us with the details of your specific tissue request. Also, you will need to submit your project description (1-2 pages) and your current IRB approval along with the Tissue Update Form if the request is for a new project.
Your request will undergo review once we have the necessary document. We will also contact you if we have any questions or concerns regarding your new tissue request.

The Biopathology Center laboratory space is over 2,500 square feet, consisting of five separate areas:
- laboratory processing space
- walk-in cooler space
- glass slides and virtual microscopy room
- freezer room
- small freezer space
The laboratory space is adequately equipped with critical pieces of equipment needed to operate the BPC, including but not limited to biological safety cabinets, Beckman Coulter ViCell Cell Viability Analyzer, centrifuges, cold sinks, cold plates, barcode cryo-labelers, microscope, reciprocal bath shaker, cassette labeler, vacuum sealer, MVE liquid nitrogen cryo-cart.
Frozen tissues (snap frozen and OCT) are stored in liquid nitrogen (vapor phase) for long term storage. Blood, plasma, serums and pleural fluids are stored in -80°C freezers. DNA and urines are stored in -20°C freezers. Paraffin blocks and unstained slides are vacuum-packed and stored in a walk-in cooler (4°C).
The BPC utilizes the Rees Scientific Environmental Monitoring system to ensure specimen integrity and quality. Freezer, refrigerator and room temperatures are monitored 24 hours a day by a wireless probe system. The system is validated annually. This system notifies the BPC staff as well as the Security and Engineering Departments in the event of an issue. A 1,500 kilowatt diesel powered generator is available to keep the freezers operating in the event of a power failure.
The BPC continues to improve biobanking practices. The BPC has reviewed and adapted The NCI First-Generation Guidelines for NCI-Supported Biorepositories and the NCI Best Practices for Biospecimen Resources as well as active participation in the NCI Group Banking Committee.
