Each year, preterm birth affects nearly 500,000 babies, or 1 in every 8 infants born in the United States. Preterm birth is when an infant is born before 37 weeks of pregnancy, and it is the leading cause of infant mortality and neurological disabilities in children.

Dr. Irina Buhimschi leads the Center for Perinatal Research - a team of dedicated doctors and scientists working to end preterm birth - at Nationwide Children's Hospital.

Her research is so promising, she's received funding from the March of Dimes, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and a USAID Grand Challenge Grant, one of only four in the world. And she's sharing her research and collaborating with other scientists around the globe to help impact entire populations.
