Study Finds Youth with Concussion May Benefit from Monitoring Sleep and Limiting Daytime Naps
Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital have found that when it comes to concussion recovery, sleep matters. In a study published today in British Journal of Sports Medicine, researchers found that limiting daytime sleep and getting approximately seven hours of sleep each night in the first week after a concussion may speed up recovery.

Injury Prediction Rule Could Decrease Radiographic Imaging Exposure in Children, Study Shows
In a study published today in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, researchers in the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) – led by Julie Leonard, MD, MPH at Nationwide Children’s Hospital –created a highly accurate cervical spine injury prediction rule. When applied, the rule decreases the use of CT by more than 50% without missing clinically significant injuries or increasing normal X-ray use.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital welcomes Alexander Bishop, DPhil, as the director of the Center for Childhood Cancer Research in the Abigail Wexner Research Institute (AWRI), effective June 1, 2025. He will also serve as principal investigator in the center, as well as the Richard J. Solove Endowed Professor and Chair in Cancer Clinical Developmental Therapeutics at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.

Jerry Mendell, MD, Announced as King Faisal Prize Laureate in Medicine
Jerry Mendell, MD, senior advisor in the Center for Gene Therapy in the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, is this year’s recipient of the King Faisal Prize for Medicine for his contributions toward the screening, diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular diseases, including spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and limb girdle muscular dystrophy.
