Center for Injury Research and Policy

The Center for Injury Research and Policy (CIRP) of The Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital works globally to reduce injury-related pediatric death and disability. With innovative research at its core, CIRP works to continually improve scientific understanding of the epidemiology, biomechanics, prevention, acute treatment and rehabilitation of injuries. CIRP serves as a pioneer by translating cutting edge injury research into education, advocacy and advances in clinical care. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) designated the Center for Injury Research and Policy as an Injury Control Research Center in 2008.

CIRP is one of 9 centers in the United States currently designated as an Injury Control Research Center (ICRC) by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

About the Center

The Center for Injury Research and Policy (CIRP) was established in 1999. In 2001, it became the first of the 12 Centers of Emphasis within the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Founded and directed by Dr. Gary Smith, CIRP is also one of only 9 Injury Control Research Centers funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is the only one focused on injuries to children and adolescents.
