Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Healthy Neighborhoods Healthy Families Receives Grant for Home Repairs in Linden and Hilltop Communities
The City of Columbus’ Department of Neighborhoods has awarded $1 million to Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Healthy Homes program, a vital part of the hospital’s Healthy Neighborhoods Healthy Families initiative. The funding will support home repair work in the Linden and Hilltop communities beginning in 2025.

Study Finds Emergency Department Visits by Children Associated with Water Beads More Than Doubled from 2021 to 2022
Researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Policy and Central Ohio Poison Center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital have found more than an estimated 8,000 visits to U.S. emergency departments (EDs) associated with water beads from 2007 through 2022, and the number of these visits increased rapidly by more than 130% from 2021 to 2022.

New Study Finds Liquid Laundry Detergent Packet Exposure Burden among Young Children Remains; Increase in Exposures among Older Children, Teens, and Adults
A new study conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Central Ohio Poison Center investigated trends in calls to poison centers across the country for exposures to liquid laundry detergent packets. The study investigators identified declines in the number, rate and severity of liquid laundry detergent packet exposures among children younger than 6 years. However, the exposure burden remained high. Additionally, exposures have increased among older children, teens and adults.

Injury Prediction Rule Could Decrease Radiographic Imaging Exposure in Children, Study Shows
In a study published today in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, researchers in the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) – led by Julie Leonard, MD, MPH at Nationwide Children’s Hospital –created a highly accurate cervical spine injury prediction rule. When applied, the rule decreases the use of CT by more than 50% without missing clinically significant injuries or increasing normal X-ray use.

Jerry Mendell, MD, Announced as King Faisal Prize Laureate in Medicine
Jerry Mendell, MD, senior advisor in the Center for Gene Therapy in the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, is this year’s recipient of the King Faisal Prize for Medicine for his contributions toward the screening, diagnosis and treatment of neuromuscular diseases, including spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and limb girdle muscular dystrophy.
