(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the second leading cause of death in youth 12-18 years old in the United States, and in 2017 alone, suicide accounted for more than 2,200 deaths among this age group.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has released its first policy statement for the multidisciplinary care of metabolic or bariatric surgery for pediatric patients with severe obesity. The statement, published in Pediatrics, provides recommendations for practitioners and policy makers, and accompanies a technical report which provides additional details and supporting evidence.

Gail Besner, MD, Named 2024 Allen Distinguished Scholar in Pediatric Research
Gail Besner, MD, chief of Pediatric Surgery and principal investigator in the Center for Perinatal Research in the Abigail Wexner Research Institute (AWRI) at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, was named the 2024 Allen Distinguished Scholar in Pediatric Research. The award is given in honor of former Nationwide Children’s CEO, Steve Allen, MD, and his role in growing the AWRI into a preeminent research institution.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital announced today Butterfly PAWS, an expanded facility and therapy dog program to support healing, and emotional and mental well-being and contribute to best outcomes for patients, families and staff. To celebrate Butterfly PAWS, the hospital unveiled “Canine Corner,” a special area on the first floor of the hospital featuring seating for families during their visit, animal friends Gus and Junebug and a digital display dedicated to highlighting pups and patients alike.

New Study Highlights Urgent Need for Targeted Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Support for Sexual and Gender Diverse Youth
Researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Policy of the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital analyzed six years of multistate child death review data from the United States and found that 81% of sexual and gender diverse youth in the dataset died by suicide, despite many receiving current or prior mental health services.
