Beginning today, Nationwide Children’s Hospital will provide specialized pediatric outpatient care for the Athens community and surrounding areas at a new Close To HomeSM center. The new center that is located in OhioHealth’s O’Bleness medical office building at 26 Hospital Drive in Athens will offer convenient access to care under one roof.

Mendell, MD Center for Gene Therapy at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute, in honor of Jerry Mendell, MD, a pioneer in the fields of neurology and gene therapy and a catalyst for advancement in the treatment of multiple neuromuscular disorders.

Study Finds Emergency Department Visits by Children Associated with Water Beads More Than Doubled from 2021 to 2022

Researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Policy and Central Ohio Poison Center at Nationwide Children’s Hospital have found more than an estimated 8,000 visits to U.S. emergency departments (EDs) associated with water beads from 2007 through 2022, and the number of these visits increased rapidly by more than 130% from 2021 to 2022.

Study Shows Text Messages Help Youth at Risk For Suicide Feel Supported After Discharge

In a study published today in the JMIR Pediatrics and Parenting, faculty at the Center for Suicide Prevention and Research (CSPR) at Nationwide Children’s Hospital described the implementation of an automated Caring Contacts texting system and found the intervention helped youth at risk for suicide feel hopeful and supported during a period of heightened risk. According to the study, this intervention and similar efforts to improve care transitions are critical to improving youth suicide prevention outcomes.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital welcomes Jason Newland, MD, MEd, as the division chief of Infectious Diseases and an associate investigator in the Center for Child Health Equity and Outcomes Research in the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s. Dr. Newland is also a tenured professor at The Ohio State University and will hold the Cramblett Endowed Chair in Pediatric Infectious Diseases.
