FDA Grants Nationwide Children’s Hospital Researchers Safe-To-Proceed Authorization on First-In-World CAR-NK Cells Made with CRISPR/AAV
Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital have received safe-to-proceed approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Universal-Donor CD38KO CD33CAR-NK cells, to be studied in a forthcoming clinical trial. The Phase 1 trial will study the safety of the novel therapy in patients with advanced, high-risk acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

Study Finds Youth with Concussion May Benefit from Monitoring Sleep and Limiting Daytime Naps
Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital have found that when it comes to concussion recovery, sleep matters. In a study published today in British Journal of Sports Medicine, researchers found that limiting daytime sleep and getting approximately seven hours of sleep each night in the first week after a concussion may speed up recovery.

Study Shows Increase in Calls to Poison Centers for Child and Adolescent Exposures to Caffeine Energy Products, Including 633% Increase in Powdered Caffeine Exposures
A new study examining calls to United States poison centers for exposures to caffeine energy products in people younger than 20 years, conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Central Ohio Poison Center, shows a significant rise in exposure rates from 2011 through 2023, with variations by product formulation.

Nationwide Children’s Hospital Researcher Receives Grant from the Rosenau Family Research Foundation
The Rosenau Family Research Foundation has awarded a three-year grant of $375,000 total in funding to Allison Bradbury, MS, PhD, along with collaborators at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and Auburn University, for studying in-utero gene therapy as a potential treatment for Krabbe disease and other lysosomal storage diseases.

FosterHub Kicks off Renovations on New Transitional Housing and Training Center
In partnership with the Appalachian Children Coalition and Nationwide Children’s Hospital, FosterHub celebrated today the project launch for a $7.3 million comprehensive transitional housing and training center to support youth as they age out of the foster care system. The City of Columbus’ Department of Neighborhoods has awarded $1 million to Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Healthy Homes program, a vital part of the hospital’s Healthy Neighborhoods Healthy Families initiative. New Study Highlights Urgent Need for Targeted Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Support for Sexual and Gender Diverse Youth
Researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Policy of the Abigail Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital analyzed six years of multistate child death review data from the United States and found that 81% of sexual and gender diverse youth in the dataset died by suicide, despite many receiving current or prior mental health services.
