(Toledo, Ohio) – Nationwide Children’s Hospital - Toledo announced today a planned $100 to $150 million investment to expand pediatric care across the Toledo region over the next five years. The investment will support the construction of two new, state-of-the-art pediatric medical facilities designed to maximize patient safety and experience, enhance care and create capacity to recruit additional providers so children in northwest Ohio can receive more care close to home.
“This investment strengthens our ongoing commitment to expanding local access to care for Toledo’s children, working collaboratively with other area providers and health care organizations,” said Rick Miller, President of Nationwide Children’s - Toledo. “It also represents an important economic opportunity for the northwest Ohio region. As we continue to recruit new providers, hire clinical support staff and expand our infrastructure, we anticipate these efforts will create several hundred new jobs locally.”
The new facilities will house a range of outpatient pediatric services, including but not limited to ancillary diagnostic testing, therapy services, behavioral health programs and clinic space for both pediatric primary care and specialty providers. They will complement the care already offered at Nationwide Children’s - Toledo by expanding capacity and improving ease of access for families across the region.
These efforts are already making a meaningful difference for local families like the Lorenz family of Perrysburg, who previously traveled to Columbus for certain types of specialty care.
“Our family has partnered with Nationwide Children’s specialists for more than a decade to support our child with more complex health needs,” said Alli and Andy Lorenz, parents of Nationwide Children’s - Toledo patient. “With their expansion to Toledo, we can now see the same trusted experts right here in our own community, receive local referrals and coordinate care more easily across multiple providers. This has saved us significant time from traveling out of the region and given us a strong support system knowing our son is receiving the best care possible close to home.”
Designed to meet the unique needs of children and families, the facilities will feature child-friendly interiors and family-centered care spaces that prioritize comfort, accessibility and clinical excellence. These new environments will support the development of multidisciplinary clinics and programs that bring pediatric subspecialists together under one roof, enabling more coordinated, comprehensive care and improving the overall patient experience. Specific locations and services will be announced in 2026. The targeted opening time frame for these new facilities is 2028 to 2030.
“Nationwide Children’s continued investment in Toledo is a testament to their statewide commitment to Ohio’s children and families,” said Governor Mike DeWine. “Their continued growth and expansion will strengthen pediatric care in northwest Ohio and help address challenges like infant mortality, that not only impact Ohio families but families nationwide.”
Since joining the northwest Ohio community in 2022, Nationwide Children’s - Toledo has made remarkable progress in expanding access to pediatric care, recruiting specialized providers and building collaborations with organizations dedicated to improving the health and well-being of local children. In three years, Nationwide Children’s - Toledo has recruited over 50 pediatric providers—the largest growth in local pediatric expertise in the region’s history—a milestone made possible through close collaboration with other Toledo health systems.
“This investment reflects our goal of ensuring Toledo’s children and families have access to exceptional care within their own community. Nationwide Children’s Hospital - Toledo cannot achieve this goal without continued collaboration with ProMedica Russell J. Ebeid Children’s Hospital, the University of Toledo, Mercy Health, and other organizations,” said R.W. Mills, Chief Medical Officer of Nationwide Children’s - Toledo. “We are proud of the progress we’ve made together, and we’re just getting started.”
Nationwide Children’s - Toledo is committed to collaborations that support and enhance pediatric care across the region. From neighboring health systems to independent providers and nonprofit organizations, the hospital believes that collaboration with other stakeholders that support the care as well as the well-being of the child and family is essential to improving whole child health in Toledo.
