Nationwide Childrens Hospital Opens First, Suburban Surgery Center in Westerville

April 24, 2012

Nationwide Children’s Hospital has opened its first suburban ambulatory surgery center. Located in Westerville, Ohio, the center is an extension of the current surgical services on the main campus, one that gives families an option for convenient access to a full spectrum of pediatric outpatient surgical services.

The Westerville Surgery Center is located near Nationwide Children’s Westerville Close To HomeSM Center on N. Cleveland Ave. and the Westerville Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center at 455 Executive Campus Drive, Westerville, Ohio 43082.

The two-story, $20.6 million center comprises 46,000 square feet of patient care areas. The first floor houses outpatient ambulatory surgery, including four state-of-the-art operating rooms, with a unique ‘one-way flow’ floor plan. This floor plan was designed to ensure that incoming surgical patients will not encounter outgoing surgical patients. Patients are cared for in private pre-operative and post-operative rooms that allow parents to stay with their child before and after surgery, giving each patient a sense of comfort with loved-ones at the bedside. The second floor houses medical and surgical pediatric subspecialty suites that service clinics in gastroenterologyorthopedic surgeryotolaryngology (ENT)pediatric surgeryurology and plastic surgery.

“The addition of the Westerville Surgery Center gives patients and their families a convenient suburban location for outpatient surgical needs,” said Richard Kirschner, MD, FACS, FAAP, director of Ambulatory Surgical Services at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. “We are committed to providing our patients and their families with the best possible care. This new center not only offers the convenience of an accessible facility, but also the world-class care our physicians provide each patient no matter the scope of their surgery.”

Nationwide Children’s Westerville Surgery Center provides patients with the same family-centered care and access to a full pediatric specialist team that are available at the main hospital. The pediatric specialist team includes pediatric anesthesiologists, anesthetists, specialty surgeons, nursing professionals and child-life specialists.

“This building is the perfect example of our dedication to, ‘Everything Matters,’” said Gina Fedel, MD, medical director of the Westerville Surgery Center. “Designed through the eyes of a child, of a parent and of a care provider, this state-of-the-art center is built to  maximize patient safety, patient and family experience and patient care.”
