Plastic Surgery provides comprehensive care for all pediatric plastic surgical problems, including congenital anomalies (such as cleft lip/palate, hand abnormalities and breast deformities,) acute traumatic injuries, skin tumors (such as moles and cysts) and reconstruction following burns and other traumatic injuries.

The Children’s Craniofacial Association (CCA) is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with facial differences and their families, in addition to addressing the medical, financial, psychosocial, emotional, and educational concerns relating to craniofacial conditions.

March of Dimes
The March of Dimes is dedicated to improving the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
        

Department Highlights

Dr. Kirschner to lead Plastic Surgery             
Richard E. Kirschner, MD, FACS, FAAP, has joined Nationwide Children's Hospital as chief of Plastic Surgery and director of the Cleft Lip and Palate-Craniofacial Center.

Dr. Kirschner is nationally recognized as a leading authority in cleft lip and palate, resonance disorders, 22q11.2 deletion syndrome and vascular malformations. He has been widely published in many leading professional publications and is actively involved in research and teaching.

He comes to Nationwide Children’s from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he served as director of both the Cleft Lip and Palate Program and Plastic Surgery Research. He also served as program director for Plastic Surgery at The University of Pennsylvania. Learn more about Dr. Kirschner.

Nationwide Children's Hospital's Hemangioma and Vascular Malformations Clinic (HVMC), located on Nationwide Children's Hospital main campus in the Outpatient Care Center, brings together a highly skilled interdisciplinary team of pediatric specialists to provide coordinated and comprehensive care for patients with vascular anomalies.

The team includes specialists in:

• Pediatric Surgery and Radiology

With the mission to provide high quality comprehensive care with focus on the patient's physical and emotional needs, the specialists work in partnership with the primary care physician and collaborate in the evaluation, treatment and management of patients.

Gayle M. Gordillo, MD, clinic director, is an Assistant Professor Surgery and Director of Research for The Ohio State University Division of Plastic Surgery.

Gregory D. Pearson, MD, is a Clinical Assistant Professor for The Ohio State University Department of Surgery, Division of Plastic Surgery.

Michael J. Miller, MD, is a member of the Section of Plastic Surgery at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and a Professor of Surgery and Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery at The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine.

Our team is actively involved in research efforts leading to break-through of new therapeutic approaches to care for patients with vascular anomalies and hemangiomas.

Comprehensive Services
Specialists at the center provide a wide range of services for patients, including:

• Consultation and evaluation of hemangiomas and other vascular malformations such as venous malformations, lymphatic malformations and patients with Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome
• State-of-the-art imaging technology including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) and ultrasonography.

Advanced surgical approaches

• Non-operative treatments: drug therapy and interventional radiology
• Minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
• Emotional support for patients
• Family centered care
