Nationwide Childrens Hospital Opens Second Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center

March 5, 2012

Nationwide Children’s Hospital has opened its second, free-standing Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center in central Ohio. Located in Dublin, Ohio, the Dublin Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center offers services including sports medicine, orthopedics, sports and orthopedic physical therapy, functional rehabilitation, radiology, athletic training, sports concussion clinics and rehabilitation and strength and conditioning and injury prevention programming. This new facility makes Nationwide Children’s the only pediatric hospital in the country with two facilities dedicated to sports medicine and orthopedic care.

The Center offers two stories, 25,000 square feet, of patient care areas with the first floor housing clinic space, casting rooms and radiology services. The second floor houses a performance arena with state-of-the-art exercise equipment, a two-lane track and basketball and dance space. There are also large areas with multipurpose sports and activity flooring that will be used for strength and conditioning and sport injury prevention. In addition to the clinical space and equipment, the facility offers one-on-one patient care. With sports medicine and orthopedic physicians on-site, the Center also houses certified athletic trainers who are dually certified in strength and conditioning in addition to physical therapists with professional and advanced certifications including board certified in Orthopedic physical therapy, certified in muscle activation technique and certified in kinesio taping.

While the Dublin Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center is similar to the Westerville Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center located in Westerville, Ohio, the new facility has additional patient care amenities including a dedicated dance rehabilitation space; a pilates reformer and Cadillac for classes taught by Nationwide Children’s STOTT PILATES® certified instructors; sports and orthopedic physical therapists and certified athletic trainers with backgrounds in dance and gymnastics; and mechanical analysis of throwing and running with corrective exercises for deficits. The new facility sits across Venture Drive from the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Dublin Close to HomeSM Center, located at 5680 Venture Drive, Dublin, Ohio 43017.

“The new Dublin facility supports the growing need to treat young athletes around central Ohio,” said Thomas Pommering, DO, medical director of Sports Medicine at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and clinical assistant professor of Pediatrics and Family Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. “The number of kids who participate in youth sports continues to grow, which, in turn, gives way to increased sport-related injuries. This new facility will serve not only as a place for treatment, but also as a place for children and their families to learn the best way to prevent injuries.”

“We are excited to offer conveniently located pediatric orthopedic services to the families of northwest Columbus and Delaware County,” said John Kean, MD, chief of Department of Orthopedics at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. “This new, state-of-the-art facility will help meet the growing need for orthopedic care.”

In addition to the sports medicine amenities, the Dublin Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center will also offer the following orthopedic services: clubfoot, pediatric trauma and fracture care, neuromuscular care, scoliosis and spinal deformity diagnosis and treatment, limb length discrepancy, bone and joint trauma and infections, arthroscopic repairs of adolescent knee and shoulder injuries, orthopedic sports medicine and pediatric and adolescent hip reconstruction.

Several services from two Dublin Close To HomeSM Centers have moved to the new Dublin Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center. Sports and Orthopedic Physical Therapy services offered at the Dublin Close To HomeSM Center on Perimeter Drive have relocated to the new center. Also, the Sports Medicine, Orthopedic and Functional Rehabilitation clinics provided at the Dublin Close To HomeSM Center on Venture Drive have moved to the new facility.

NOTE TO THE EDITOR: The Dublin Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center will be at 5680 Venture Drive, across the street from the Nationwide Children’s Dublin Close To HomeSM Center at 5675 Venture Drive and adjacent to the Nationwide Children’s Dublin Close To HomeSM Center at 5700 Perimeter Drive.
