Database and Medical Literature

The OSU libraries online catalog and circulation system - Contains book and journal titles held by CHI and OSU. With your library card, you may request books from any OSU library and with a few keystrokes, you may toggle to OhioLINK and borrow from that network.

OhioLINK (Ohio Library and Information Network) - A library network linking the collections and databases of many of Ohio's college and university libraries and the State Library of Ohio. OhioLINK allows authorized users access to the libraries’ collections and electronic databases. Although anyone is welcome to view the online catalogs, only staff of CHI, OSU or OhioLINK institutions can borrow materials or use online resources.

PubMed - Provides access to the catalogs of the state colleges and universities of Ohio, numerous databases, and electronic resources.

PubMed Tutorial - The Web-based learning program that will show you how to search PubMed®, the National Library of Medicine's (NLM™) journal literature search system.

Oncolink - Founded in 1994 by Penn cancer specialists with a mission to help cancer patients, families, health care professionals and the general public get accurate cancer-related information at no charge. Through OncoLink you can get comprehensive information about specific types of cancer, updates on cancer treatments and news about research advances.

Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) - This database is a catalog of human genes and genetic disorders. The database contains textual information, pictures, and reference information. It is edited by Dr. Victor A. McKusick and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins and developed for the web by NCBI.

Drugs and Pharmaceuticals

RxList: the Internet Drug Index - An index of 4000 U.S. drug products maintained and updated by a pharmacist with over 20 years experience.

U.S. Pharmacopeia - The world's most highly recognized and technologically advanced pharmacopeia, USP provides standards for more than 3700 medicines, dietary supplements, and dosage forms.

Organizations of Interest

American Academy of Pediatrics - Information on professional education, patient education, AAP news and publications, current immunization schedule, car seat safety and air bag safety, advocacy and research.

CDC: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - Includes sections on Travelers' Health; Health Topics A-Z; Publications, Software and Products; Data and Statistics; CDC Prevention Guidelines. Here you can find a current immunization schedule, the full text of MMWR, the latest guidelines for treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and much more.

American Medical Association - Includes news, AMA publications and information, online catalogs, books, products and services, a Doctor Finder and sections on AIDS/HIV, asthma, women's health and migraine.

Patient Education

drkoop.com - A company led by Dr. C. Everett Koop, former U.S. Surgeon General, and others who are dedicated to improving the quality of people's lives by empowering them to improve their health.

Healthfinder - A free gateway to reliable consumer health and human services information developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It can access selected online publications, clearinghouses, databases, web sites, and support and self-help groups, as well as the government agencies and not-for-profit organizations that produce reliable information for the public.

HealthWeb - A collaborative project of the health sciences libraries of the Greater Midwest Region (GMR) of the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) and those of the Committee for Institutional Cooperation. Currently there are over twenty actively participating member libraries.

Mayo Clinic Health Oasis - This site is directed by a team of Mayo physicians, scientists, writers and educators. It provides access to the experience and knowledge of the more than 1,200 physicians and scientists at Mayo. It includes information on diseases and conditions, a health library section, and a glossary of health terms.

MedicineNet - Since 1996, a network of U.S. Board Certified Physicians, Allied Health Professionals and scientists have been working together to provide the public with current, comprehensive, easy-to-read medical information via this robust, user-friendly, interactive web site. It includes information on diseases and conditions, procedures and tests, medications, first aid and poison control.

MEDLINEplus - For anyone with a medical question. Both health professionals and consumers can depend on it for accurate, current, medical information. This service provides access to extensive information about specific diseases and conditions and also has links to consumer health information from the National Institutes of Health, dictionaries, lists of hospitals and physicians, health information in Spanish and other languages, and clinical trials.

Netwellness - A non-profit consumer health web site that provides high quality information created and evaluated by medical and health professional faculty at the: University of Cincinnati, Case Western Reserve University, and The Ohio State University. Features include Ask an Expert, access to consumer health databases such as Health Reference Center and Health Source Plus, and content that includes high quality, up-to-date patient education materials.

WebMD - Helps the healthcare system work for consumers, physicians, health plans and other providers by enabling increased efficiency, better decision-making and, ultimately, higher quality patient care at a lower cost.
