What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Whether your appointment is at school or a virtual appointment at home, we want to make sure your appointment runs smoothly! Here are a few things you should know:

  • Consent: We’ll need a parent or guardian to provide consent for your appointment. Copies of the consent forms are available in the “For Parents” tab on this page. There may be additional consent required for behavioral health appointments.
  • Parent/Guardian Involvement: Parents/guardians are welcome to come to an appointment, but it is not required as long as they provide consent.*
    • When you see a nurse practitioner, staff will attempt to reach your parent/guardian using the number provided on the consent form.
    • We’ll also give you a document, called an After Visit Summary (AVS) for you to share with your parent or guardian. The AVS will describe the services provided and any recommended follow up, if needed.
    • If your visit is with a behavioral health clinician, the clinician will schedule family sessions and/or phone calls with your parents/ guardians to provide updates on progress and to seek input on treatment decisions.

*A parent/guardian is required to be present for any behavioral health appointment.

Telehealth (Virtual) Appointments at Home

Behavioral Health services, and some health services, are available as telehealth appointments on a case-by-case basis. Telehealth lets you connect with pediatric health experts on your phone or your computer.

  • Telehealth can be done over the phone or by a video call.
  • Video visits will be done using Zoom, a free video conferencing service, and a MyChart account. Nationwide Children’s uses a corporate Zoom account that is secure and HIPAA compliant.

Established primary care and/or behavioral health patients have access to outpatient psychiatry and/or telespsychiatry services based on clinical need. Please speak with your Nationwide Children's Hospital school-based provider for more information.

If you are interested in a telehealth appointment, please mention telehealth when you or your parent/guardian call to schedule a visit. Staff will help determine if telehealth will work for each student’s needs.
