Sickle Cell OUTreach in Schools (SCOUTS) Program

The Sickle Cell OUTreach in Schools (SCOUTS) Program supports children with sickle cell disease by providing the care and services they need – right at school.

The SCOUTS team serves as a liaison among all the entities involved in your child’s care, including school staff, school nurses and the health care providers, to help improve medication adherence, bridge gaps in care and provide education to schools and families.

How We Can Help

Our team will help to…

  • Ensure clear and accurate communication between your family, the school and your medical provider about your child’s care needs.
  • Coordinate check-in meetings with your child’s care team at school.
  • Help your child take their medication regularly at school.
  • Send prescriptions to the pharmacy.
  • Work with you to review lab results and complete necessary paperwork.
  • Share valuable resources and connect you to needed services and programs.
  • Provide sickle cell education to school families and staff members.

How to Enroll

The SCOUTS program is available to hematology patients at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. If your child is receiving treatment for sickle cell disease at Nationwide Children’s and you’re interested in enrolling in the SCOUTS program, please let your provider know or contact us directly using the information below.

If your child is not currently a patient at Nationwide Children’s, we can still help. Our team can connect you with resources, schedule an appointment with our hematology team and provide education for school staff about sickle cell disease.
