School-Based Dental Care

Nationwide Children’s Hospital offers school-based dental services at select central Ohio locations. One of the most common childhood diseases is tooth decay, which can result in pain and infection. Our school-based dental services help to make sure students’ teeth stay healthy and strong.

No child will be denied care due to inability to pay for services.

How Does it Work?

  • A parent or guardian must provide consent for your child to be seen by the provider.
  • Once the consent form is completed, our team will contact you directly to schedule dental services.
  • Students will have their dental appointment right inside the school building during the school day. Parents and guardians are not required to be at appointment, but you are welcome to come if you prefer to be there.
  • After your child's appointment, they will receive a paper that explains what services were provided during the visit with any needed follow up instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who provides these dental services?

General or pediatric dentists , pediatric dental residents (dentists who spend two extra years training to become pediatric dental specialists), hygienists and dental assistants from Nationwide Children’s.

My child already has a dentist. Can I sign them up?

No. This program is not to replace your child’s current dental provider. If they already have a dentist, please continue seeing them for care.

What if my child needs more treatment than the school-based dental services offers?

If the treatment your child needs is too complex for our school-based dental services, we will refer you to the dental clinic at Nationwide Children’s or to a dental specialist who can provide services.

Will we be charged for these services?

Just like other providers, your child’s dental insurance will be billed for the services provided through the school-based dental clinic.

If your child does not have dental insurance, then you will be connected with a financial counselor at Nationwide Children’s to see if your child qualifies for insurance or financial assistance.

Will I get information about my child’s appointment and overall oral health?

Yes. Every time your child has an appointment with us, they will receive a piece of paper, called an After Visit Summary, that gives information about your child’s appointment and oral health.
