Interventional Endoscopy
Providing a Minimally Invasive Approach to Diagnosing and Treating GI Conditions
Interventional GI Endoscopy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital
Interventional gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy offers a less invasive way to diagnose and treat conditions that affect the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, gallbladder and intestines. A less invasive procedure means fewer risks and less pain to your child than traditional surgery. Your child’s recovery time is also shorter. Age-appropriate care is important to ensure every patient, from infant to teen, receives the right care. Nationwide Children’s is one of only a few hospitals in the country that can perform these complex procedures for children.
Nationwide Children's Hospital is ranked by U.S. News & World Report for Gastroenterology and GI Surgery.
Interventional GI Endoscopy Procedures
An endoscopy is a procedure that looks at the inside of your child’s stomach and intestines (gastrointestinal tract). Interventional endoscopy provides more advanced procedures and therapies for certain conditions. The specially trained doctor, called an interventional endoscopist, uses a long, flexible tube (scope) with a light and a camera on the end. This doctor will be able to diagnose and treat certain conditions using various tools.
Not every procedure is right for every child. Your child’s care team will recommend the safest and most appropriate option based on your child’s needs.

Meet the Interventional Endoscopy Team
It’s not just who treats your child that makes a difference at Nationwide Children’s. It’s how your child is treated here. Helping children and teens feel better is our purpose and what drives us each day. It’s why we do what we do. From diagnosis to treatment to recovery, a team of specialty experts is required to ensure the best outcome. Your child’s care will be led by a pediatric gastroenterologist who is the director of interventional and diagnostic endoscopy.
Our team is here to help your child get back to the life they want to live. Our experts strive to give families answers and treatment options. For children with more complex conditions, we have the resources to develop a care plan for as long as they need one. From surgery to therapy to ongoing follow-up, your team is with you every step of the way.
Muhammad Khan, MD, MPH, FASGE, is a pediatric gastroenterologist and the director of interventional and diagnostic endoscopy. Dr. Khan received additional training in interventional endoscopy to treat more children using less invasive strategies. His endoscopic skills include POEM, endoscopic ultrasound, pancreaticobiliary endoscopy and complex polyp resections. He is one of very few pediatric gastroenterologists in the United States performing all these interventional endoscopy procedures for children.
Andrea L. Newport, APRN, FNP‑BC, is a family nurse practitioner in the Interventional Endoscopy program at Nationwide Children’s. With extensive experience in gastroenterology, Andrea works closely with Dr. Khan and also collaborates with the Neurogastroenterology and Motility Center, and the Pancreas and Liver Care Center. Andrea’s blend of specialized GI training, procedural skill and interdisciplinary collaboration play an integral role in the Interventional Endoscopy program.

Leading the Way to New Treatments and Outcomes Through Clinical Research
Clinical care and research work together. This helps scientists and doctors to find new treatments and therapies. Clinical studies (also called clinical trials) will continue to become more common in daily care at Nationwide Children’s. Clinical studies help doctors learn more about conditions and treatment.
The physicians and surgeons at Nationwide Children’s work with other medical professionals and scientists to develop new treatments, improve quality of life and raise the standards of care for children. This means you might hear about a clinical study that your child might be able to join. This does not mean that your child has to join a study. You always have the choice about whether or not to join a study.
