Nationwide Foundation’s $10 million Pediatric Innovation Fund supports Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s affordable housing, clinical research work

The Nationwide Foundation announced today a $10 million investment through its Pediatric Innovation Fund to expand Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s affordable housing in the Linden and South Side neighborhoods and advance the hospital’s groundbreaking work in genomic medicine, data science and clinical research. The 2025 gift, which builds on more than a decade of philanthropic investments in vital programs, supports key hospital initiatives including biomedical data sciences, genomics, population health, endowed chairs and behavioral health. These programs seek to help all children have a healthy future, whether they live in central Ohio or across the United States.

A new study reveals that ingestions of nicotine pouches by young children have surged in recent years. Our researcher, along the Central Ohio Poison Center experts analyzed calls to U.S. poison centers and found an alarming 763% increase in the rate of reported nicotine pouch ingestions among children younger than 6 years old from 2020 to 2023.

Study Finds Teens Driving Older Vehicles Have Increased Risk for Fatal Crashes

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens. Newer vehicles and driver assistance technologies show promise in reducing crashes and injury severities. Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital reviewed national fatal crash data (2016-2021) and examined the vehicle age and driver assistance technologies of vehicles driven by teen and middle-aged drivers, and their associations with driver deaths during fatal crashes.

Researchers at Nationwide Children’s Hospital have found that when it comes to concussion recovery, sleep matters. In a study published today in British Journal of Sports Medicine, researchers found that limiting daytime sleep and getting approximately seven hours of sleep each night in the first week after a concussion may speed up recovery.
