WHY
The Butterfly Run is different than many runs that have taken place in Columbus and other parts of the country. The scope of pediatric behavioral health -- suicide, depression, eating disorders, ADHD and trauma – is wide, and the statistics are staggering:
- One in five children, ages 13-18, have or will have a serious mental illness[i]
- Half of all chronic mental illness begins by age 14; three-quarters by age 24[ii]
- Suicide is the third leading cause of death in kids ages 10-241
- The average delay between onset of symptoms and intervention is 8-10 years1
Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Big Lots want to break stigmas and foster community conversation in support of children with behavioral health issues. Behavioral health issues in kids are on the rise nationally.
