New Guidance for Safe Contraceptive Use: Key Updates from the CDC

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Division of Reproductive Health released the 2024 U.S. Medical Eligibility Criteria (MEC) for Contraceptive Use on August 8, marking the first major update since 2016. Key updates include new guidelines for obesity, lupus, sickle cell disease and chronic kidney disease. The companion guide, Select Practice Recommendations, now includes advice on IUD (intrauterine device) placement, managing bleeding with contraceptive implants and more. These updates aim to reduce medical barriers and support patient-centered, non-coercive contraceptive services. Access the updated guidelines by downloading the CDC smartphone app or visiting the CDC webpage.
