As Nationwide Children’s Hospital's Critical Care Transport Team our mission is to provide emergency care and stabilization of the neonatal, pediatric and adult patient population.
The transport program provides critical care inter-facility transportation, 24 hours a day seven days a week.
The team provides transportation combined with a high level of care to critically ill patients from referring hospitals to Nationwide Children’s Hospital to receive specialty care. On occasion the team provides “reverse” transportation to referring hospitals after receiving care at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
We are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation on Medical Transport Systems.
Nationwide Children's Transport program provides 24 hour pediatric and neonatal critical care transport services via mobile ICU, helicopter, and jet aircraft to over 3,000 patients each year, with more than half of those being newborns. The team is one of the few in the country capable of transporting by air neonates on nitric oxide therapy and high-frequency oscillation at the same time.
Meet Our Team
The team is comprised of RNs, respiratory therapists, transport technicians (all EMT-P certified), and EMT/EMT-P drivers. Our teams work closely with our medical directors and medical control physicians to provide specialty specific patient care. The care is driven by a combination of medical director-approved protocols and guidelines as well as online medical control via telephone during the transport process. All primary care providers on the team are trained and proficient in many advanced skills, including but not limited to:
- Advanced pediatric/neonatal assessment
- Endotracheal intubation
- Advanced ventilator management
- Umbilical catheter placement
- Critical care medication administration
- Chest tube insertion

CAMTS Accreditation for Nationwide Children's Transport Team
Nationwide Children’s Transport Team for the third time received a “Fully accredited” status on the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) accreditation. CAMTS is an independent, non-profit agency which audits and accredits airplane, helicopter, and ground medical transport services worldwide to a set of industry established standards.
The team’s commitment to best outcomes is reflective in this accreditation. Being CAMTS accredited is considered one of the most prestigious certifications a medical transport company can achieve. The accreditation is voluntary and granted to programs that demonstrate substantial compliance with the accreditation standards to demonstrate their ability to deliver safe and high quality services. The team successfully completed a rigorous review of all services; dispatch, ground, helicopter, and airplane, as well as site inspections, reviews of documentation, and personal interviews of medical transportation personnel, hospital corporate compliance, and examinations as part of the overall accreditation process.
The Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems will conduct an accreditation site visit of Nationwide Children’s Hospital Transport Team on June 29th – June 30th, 2020.
The purpose of the site visit will be to evaluate the program’s compliance with nationally established medical transport standards. The site visit results will be used to determine whether, and the conditions under which accreditation should be awarded to the program.
CAMTS accreditation standards deal with issues of patient care and safety of the transport environment. Anyone believing that he or she has pertinent or valid information about such matters may request a public information interview with the CAMTS site surveyors at the time of the site visit. Information presented at the interview will be carefully evaluated for relevance to the accreditation process. Requests for public information interviews must be made in writing and sent to CAMTS no later than 10 business days before the site survey begins. The request should also indicate the nature of the information to be provided during the interview. Such request should be addressed to:

The Commission will acknowledge such written requests in writing or by telephone and will inform the program of the request for an interview. The Commission will, in turn, notify the interviewee of the date, time and place of the meeting.
This notice is posted in accordance with CAMTS requirements and shall not be removed until the site visit is completed.
